In the field application, a proprietary oil-in-water emulsion fluid which contained hollow glass bubbles was used during the drilling of a producing interval. The oil-in-water emulsion provided a suitable fluid base, whereas the glass bubbles, by virtue of their low density, imparted a lower finished density than that of the corresponding base fluid. The density lowering capacity of the glass bubbles is proportional to the concentration of bubbles incorporated in the fluid. In the field application, the fluid-glass bubble pair is stable, homogenous, and compatible through conventional mud motors, bits, surface cleaning equipment, and of such rheological and filtrate properties, as to lend itself to be used in low pressure reservoirs and in producing zones of high permeability. Glass beads spherical structure, which has high hardness, smooth surface, such as features, rolling performance is good. Use it as drilling fluid additives, can play a role similar to the bearing in the ball, greatly reduce the frictional resistance of drill pipe, drilling fluid, fast bit drilling, improve the rate of penetration, and reduce the bit wear. Now, in the exploration and development is difficult, purpose layer under the condition of buried depth, low formation pressure with application of glass beads in underbalance drilling has many advantages, one of the biggest advantages is the glass beads can improve drilling speed; From the shaft to the differential fluid pressure of formation fluid in the range of 0 ~ 6.9 Mpa, the common drilling method in sandstone, limestone, shale drilling efficiency would lower 70 ~ 80%, and the glass beads can reduce wellbore pressure significantly improve drilling efficiency. Hollow glass microspheres are lightweight, high-strength, low-density additives that find application in various industries, including the oil and gas sector. In drilling fluids, they can be used to achieve specific properties and benefits. Here are some ways in which hollow glass microspheres are employed in lightweight drilling fluids: Density Control: Reducing Overall Fluid Density: Hollow glass microspheres are added to drilling fluids to reduce their overall density. This is particularly useful in drilling operations where maintaining wellbore stability and preventing formation damage are crucial. Lost Circulation Control: Preventing Fluid Loss: Drilling fluids with hollow glass microspheres can help prevent lost circulation issues by creating a seal in the wellbore, reducing the risk of fluid loss into permeable formations. Temperature Insensitivity: Maintaining Stability at High Temperatures: Hollow glass microspheres are often preferred for high-temperature drilling environments. They maintain stability at elevated temperatures, providing a consistent performance in extreme drilling conditions. Improved Rheological Properties: Enhancing Fluid Flow: Incorporating hollow glass microspheres can enhance the rheological properties of drilling fluids, making them easier to pump and circulate. This is beneficial for efficient drilling operations. Reduced Erosion and Wear: Protecting Equipment: The use of lightweight additives like hollow glass microspheres can help reduce erosion and wear on drilling equipment. This is especially important in situations where abrasive formations are encountered. Cement Slurry Density Reduction: Lightweight Cement Slurries: Hollow glass microspheres can be added to cement slurries to reduce their density. This is important for cementing operations, where achieving a specific density is crucial for success. Formation Damage Mitigation: Minimizing Formation Invasion: The low-density nature of hollow glass microspheres can help minimize invasion into permeable formations, reducing the risk of formation damage during drilling. Enhanced Drilling Fluid Performance: Optimizing Drilling Parameters: Incorporating hollow glass microspheres allows for the optimization of drilling parameters, such as mud weight and rheological properties, leading to improved drilling fluid performance. It's important to note that the specific application and concentration of hollow glass microspheres in drilling fluids will depend on the drilling conditions, wellbore requirements, and the overall drilling fluid formulation. Additionally, ongoing research and development in the field may lead to further innovations in the use of hollow glass microspheres in drilling fluids.
